We have just the experience for you, Join our ACA kayak and Sup instructors and get training in both so that you can enjoys small groups trips on the Hudson River.

TOURS AND TRAINING

Every Wednesday and Friday afternoon from 2pm to 7:45 Pm (weather permitting) Individuals and groups must register for these classes and trips. There are three sessions per day:

Session1 2-3:45pm

Session 2 4-5:45pm

Session 3 6-7:45pm

A $20 (one-time) registration fee is required for insurance purposes and entitles participants to one year of Associate Membership in Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club.


 

Curriculum:

  • Kayaking Session 1

    Paddling lesson on land: Forward stroke, reverse stroke, left turn, right turn. Spend most of the first session mainly in the cove to build up basic skills. Paddle half a mile to Corinthian boat club.

  • Kayaking Session 2

    Quick paddle lesson refresher on land with side draw, and ruddering being shown, and practiced. Spend a bit of time in the cove. Paddle one and a half miles to Yonkers Yacht Club, and Palisade Boat club.

  • Kayaking Session 3

    On land refresher of skills. Go over parts of a kayak in detail. Spend some time in the cove before paddling across to the Kearney House Landing in Alpine Park, New Jersey. 1.38 miles

  • Stand Up Paddleboarding

    PADDLE:
    How to hold/orient paddle while kneeling and standing
    Identify on and off side
    Technique for switching sides
    Vertical paddle shaft for forward paddling

    STANCE:
    Prone
    Sitting
    Kneeling

    STROKES:
    Forward
    Reverse (back stroke)
    Sweeps (Forward / Reverse)
    Draw
    Bracing (Low / High, Sculling & Slap)

    MANEUVERS:
    Forward Paddling: 200 yards paddle in a straight line
    Stop: stop the SUP from a good speed (w/I 1 board length)
    Bracing
    Spinning: spin SUP using full forward and reverse
    sweeps or draw (on and off side)
    Lateral Movement: use draws to travel sideways
    Turning on the Move: sweep strokes or draws while underway to turn board

    SAFETY & RESCUE
    Recoveries: Recover board and paddle after fall into water (with and without leash)
    Deep Water Rescue: unassisted remounting of board from side or back of board
    Towing: use leash or tow tether to tow weak or injured paddler
    Unresponsive paddler rescue (passive victim rescue)

    TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
    Equipment: knowledge of SUP boards and paddles.
    Wind, Waves, Water and Weather as it relates to paddlers
    Safety: understand the risks of SUP and hazard avoidance
    Cold Water Shock - Hypothermia - Hyperthermia: recognition and treatment
    Group Awareness: familiar with group dynamics and with whistle and paddle signals
